Higan is a Buddhist event peculiar to Japan. The three days before and after the vernal equinox are called "spring higan" (haru no o Higan)and the three days before and after the autumnal equinox are called "autumn higan" (aki no o Higan).  Both higan are times of seasonal change. The word "higan" meaning " the other shore," or, in Buddhism, "nirvana." On these occasions people visit their ancesteors' graves.
